A Different Perspective
8” x 10”
These images of the Egyptian Isis, Hindu Yashoda, and Christian Mary are all examples of the tenderness of motherhood all the while exuding deeper strength and power. They are non-traditional mothers in that they stand alone; there is no requisite male partner that we usually imagine to be necessary for conception. Each of them have a unique story about their “unnatural” conceptions, and send a message that includes fecundity alongside independence and empowerment. I chose the image of Christian Mary based upon the remarkable story of the artist who painted her, Artemisia Gentileschi, a too-often overlooked female artist from the Italian Renaissance.
