Black Madonna of Cleremont-Ferrand (SOLD)
16.5” x 8”
This piece is special, as it was chosen by the curator of the Nobel Museum to be part of an exhibition celebrating the inaugural Day of Religious Pluralism in Atlanta. The shrine itself was a gift to me from a couple who saw it, and knowing my work, gave it to me in hopes that I put it to good use. I wanted to use a Black Madonna, because the stories surrounding their mysterious powers fascinate me, and I also believe it to be a more accurate representation of the Madonna, since stories of Christ are from the Middle East and Africa. The gingko leaves that form her halo are from my garden, as are the thorn branches. I wanted to use the red candles to light the shrine, partly because it is very deep, and also because I wanted it to feel like votives found in the side chapels of Christian churches.
