Durga | Lilith | Coatlicue
Durga, (or Kali as she is sometimes known), is the central figure in this shrine. She is one of the ten Objects of Transcendent Knowledge. She causes the destruction of all limitations, preconceived ideas, and illusions regarding our individual existence. She destroys obstacles and hardships on the spiritual path, as it is through destruction that we are able to let go of illusions of desire and fear, and attain the bliss of nonexistence. The medal of Parvarti represents another side of her nature. Coatlique is the Aztec Goddess of Life, Death, and Rebirth. Mother of all Aztec deities, sun, moon, stars, and earthly life. Her head is made by two snakes flowing from her neck; she represents the cosmic struggle of dynamic opposites. The image of Lilith was originally painted red, with a black background. She is a Mesopotamian deity, and holds a rod and ring of justice, symbols of her divinity. Her wings point down, indicating that she is a Goddess of the Underworld. All of these deities are associated with transcendence and change.
